Dravske Elektrarne Maribor also successful under new management
In spite of the ever greater liberalisation of the energy market, DEM would like a more active role in managing the national wealth and in strengthening the role of bearer of economic development.
(Maribor, 15th February 2007) – The company Dravske Elektrarne Maribor (DEM), in spite of worse hydrology, successfully traded last year, and made a trading profit of 4.684.995.000,00 SIT (19,55 Million Euros). This is the indication of the unconfirmed trading results, which were presented by the director, Damijan Koletnik after his first 100 days of managing the company.
This year slightly worse results are expected by the company, which produces 75 percentage of all generated electric energy from renewable resources in Slovenia. Because of ever greater burdening of the company and an ever greater liberalized energy market the company has to deal with sharper operating conditions. DEM will seek the response in an improved product, internal company reorganisation, and sensible continuation of development projects that have already been started and in research of new development opportunities. At the same time they are looking for a more active role in managing the national wealth and in strengthening the role of bearer of economic development in the environment in which they have already been operating and also in those, in which they are going to enter.

Profit is a little lower than the year before, but it is due to decreased generation because of lower hydrology and because of an increase in the company’s obligations to the state and the local authorities. Despite that, they are satisfied with the business results because they managed to increase the additional value per employee by effective control of expenses and rationalisation of working processes. They wish to maintain that strategy also in the future, which is why they are going to proceed with the reorganisation of the company.

In DEM in the last period they have optimized the majority of their own capacity. There is also in progress the refurbishment of the biggest Slovenian hydroelectric plant in Zlatolicje, of which the estimated value amounts to 63 million euros. It is anticipated that it will be finished in the year 2009, and with it DEM will enlarge its generation by approximately five per cent. The most attention in the future will be given to development projects. In accordance with the schedule, it is also running the in depth preparation for building a new pumped storage power plant on the river Drava (CHE) in the region Kozjak and the transmission line CHE-RTP Maribor. The project has also got its own place in resolution about national development, projects for the period 2007-2023, which is why its realisation means, according to DEM, a great opportunity for the area’s development, which they will need to take advantage of.

Right at the start of this year they have also prepared an enlistment of all the studies, which will mean a complete review of the ecological condition of the river Mura and they will at the same time give an answer about the sensible energy use of its water body. In the company they are hoping that the studies will be realized with wide support and the understanding of Pomurje residents, that is why the project is being run on the principle of small steps. As an example in neighbouring Austria, where there are on the river Mura 30 hydroelectric plants and the local areas in its vicinity are using this opportunity for development in various fields. Despite that, what the studies will show, DEM wishes to enter into the environment as a development partner of the environment.

“All our efforts have in common the goal of maximisation of additional value for the owner in management of the national wealth. It is shown in quality consistency and punctual assurance of electric energy from renewable resources on a national level. Because DEM at the same time also represents an important basis for the economic development of the regions, where it is operating, the responsibility of our company and of all our employees will be at the ever higher burdening of the liberalisation of the energy market, which in the future will be even bigger,” at the end of presentation said the DEM director, Damijan Koletnik
