Dravske elektrarne Maribor going into second half of the year with excellent results (Maribor, 26 July 2006) - The company Dravske elektrarne Maribor (DEM), the largest hydro power company in Slovenia, which manages a total of eight hydro power plants (Dravograd, Vuzenica, Vuhred, Ožbalt, Fala, Mariborski otok, Zlatoličje and Formin), including small hydroelectric power plants, with one located on the river Mura in Ceršak, has been seeing an improvement in its financial performance since 2002.
DEM, which generates as much as 25 per cent of all Slovenian electrical power or 80 per cent of all Slovenian electrical power which conforms to the criteria of renewable energy sources and standards of the internationally recognised RECS certificate (Renewable Energy Certificates System), concluded 2005 with a record net profit in the amount of SIT 5.1 billion.
Operations in the first half of the current financial year have also been very successful, as the realisation of the planned generation for the period January-July was 103 per cent, which is why the net profit in the first six months of the year beat forecasts by 4 per cent.
»Excellent financial results are undoubtedly the result of the conclusion of refurbishment of upper Drava power plants, which now boast increased power capacity by almost a full power plants, the new organisation structure and cost management, which we devoted a lot of attention to here at DEM during the last few years«, stated the managing director of DEM, Danilo Šef.
In accordance with the strategic plans by DEM and owner HSE, the conclusion of upgrading the six power plants on the upper part of the river Drava, the restoration of existing capacities has moved to lower Drava, where works within the scope of the refurbishment of power plant Zlatoličje are already underway, while works on power plant Formin are to follow, all with the objective of harnessing the power of the previously built and installed energy installations in the most rational way possible.
Development plans include the declaration of DEM operations in other Slovene river basins; DEM is a 30 per cent co-investor in the project of constructing hydro power plants on the lower Sava, entitled Skupni podvig (Joint Venture), while last year also saw the small power station Ceršak on the river Mura come under the wings of DEM. Furthermore, the start of the year saw the initiation of the state plan for the pumping power plant on Drava, within the Kozjak region.
Proof of the company’s current recognisable status in the local environment comes in the form of the award given out by magazine Mariborčan, which DEM as the Best Large Enterprise received in 2005. Its improved public profile was helped by its new integral graphic image, while the company mission and vision have also been redefined, with its objective set to achieve financial success while considering the principals of sustainable development in the environment in which it operates.
