The Drava River is the new challenge for Martin Strel (Maribor, 8 June 2006) Professional swimmer Martin Strel, world record holder in stage and continuous swimming, today presented his latest swimming challenge Drava 2006 to the media and his partners at an official press conference. The presentation was held at Dravske elektrarne Maribor (DEM), who will act as the principal sponsor for the swimmer’s latest challenge.
The Project Drava 2006, which will mark Martin Strel’s tribute to the 15 years of Slovene independence, will begin with a symbolic start in the Italian town of Toblach, where the source of the river Drava is located. The swimming stages will take place in the following consecutive order:
- in Austria: Lienz (20. 6.), Spittal (21. 6.), Ferlach (22. 6.), Ruden (23. 6.) - in Slovenia: Vuhred (24. 6.), Maribor (25. 6.), Ormož (26. 6.). Martin Strel will swim his final stage in Croatia, as the goal of his eight-day swim will ultimately be Varaždin.
Danilo Šef, managing director of Dravske elektrarne Maribor, expressed his satisfaction that, following all of his global achievements, Martin Strel has picked the river Drava as his next challenge, as it offers numerous recreational and social activities on and by the river in addition to the power supply that it provides, all of which incorporates the principles of sustainable development, which is endorsed by Dravske elektrarne Maribor.
The world record holder in stage and continuous swimming Martin Strel likes to emphasise that he is swimming for peace, friendship and clean water. In this, he is always accompanied by his trustworthy team, who ensure his safety, good humour and various associated events. This year, one of his stages will see him accompanied by the Drava raftsmen, while he is also set to stop off at the popular Festival Lent, where he will greet visitors from the main stage at 7 p.m. on 24 June.
